Acupuncture and Electroacupuncture
Acupuncture is used at pet rehab as part of a holistic package to manage pain and return from injury. It can be combined with pain controlling medication and treatments such as physiotherapy, laser and ultrasound therapy and chiropractic treatment.
Typical conditions that we may treat with acupuncture :
- Spinal pain such as intervertebral disc disease
- Lumobacral disease
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Stress and behavioural conditions
- Gastrointestinal disease
- Respiratory disease
- Trigger points
Electroacupuncture used the same principles and acupuncture points but a small microcurrent is added to the needle. This provides a stronger stimulation and can be particularly effective for spinal disease and for peripheral neuropathies such as brachial plexus injury or sciatic injury.
The current is adjusted to be comfortable for the patient and generally a profound endorphin release is seen with many animals going to sleep with the treatment.
